Phil Huckelberry, Green Party candidate for 88th State Representative, will be one of the featured speakers at the progressive student-run festival "Who's Left" being held on the ISU Quad this Friday, September 10.
The purpose of the event is to bring together a coalition of students and community members to promote progressive issues. Other featured speakers include Kendra Muhammad, speaking on civil rights issues; Sandra Lindberg, speaking about the proposed second Clinton nuclear reactor; and Janie Leatherman, speaking on peace issues. In addition to speakers, the event will feature music, poetry, and theatre.
"We're very excited about Who's Left," says Amy Butterworth, one of the event's primary sponsors and a leading student activist. "We see this is a great opportunity to bring student and community leaders together and open dialogues that haven't been open in the past."
Huckelberry will be speaking largely about the event's main theme of groups coming together to work with one another on projects of mutual interest. He will touch on topics ranging from overhauling the state education funding system to the need for the community to reach out to and work with student leaders.
"There's been a lot of flag waving lately with presidential candidates trying to prove they're more macho than each other, as though America is about being macho." says Huckelberry. "Being American isn't about being tougher or stronger than the next guy. What it means to be an American is spelled out in our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution – equal rights for all, the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Preserving these basic American rights and championing basic American values – that's what progressivism is all about."
Campus organizations expected to table at the event include Student Peace Action Network, Student Environmental Action Coalition, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, and the ISU Campus Greens. Community groups expected to participate include the American Civil Liberties Union, No New Nukes, and Bloomington-Normal Citizens for Peace and Justice
